Our New Logo
The Diverse Solidarity Economies Collective has updated their look with a new logo! You’ll see our new look everywhere from on our website, our social media, to our correspondence.
The butterfly is a meaningful symbol for the the social solidarity economy, because similar to the butterfly, the social solidarity economy is the result of the metamorphosis. In this case one from a capitalistic system to a postcapitalistic one.
In Emily Kawano’s article Imaginal Cells of the Solidarity Economy, in the Summer 2021 edition of the Nonprofit Quarterly, Kawano draws parallels between the social solidarity economy and a butterfly. This metaphor is excellent in communicating the ideology of the DISE Collective, and is worth noting.
What Are Imaginal Cells?
Imaginal cells are specialized cells in insect larvae that remain dormant until metamorphosis, when they develop into adult structures like wings and legs. They play a crucial role in transforming the caterpillar into a butterfly by reorganizing and forming new tissues during the pupal stage.
How Are the Foundations of The Solidarity Economy Practices Like Imaginal Cells?
“Currently, they are in the equivalent of a dormant stage within the caterpillar of capitalism. However, the convergent crises of the pandemic, climate change, the racism and violence that have sparked the widespread racial justice uprisings, the economic divide, and the alarming slide toward fascism also create opportunity. “ - Nonprofit Quarterly, “The World We Want: In Search of New Economic Paradigms”.
