Book reviewed by SOAS University of London Economist

The latest book edited by Dr. Caroline Hossein and fellow DISE Collective member Dr. Sharon D. Wright Austin Beyond Racial Capitalism: Co-operatives in the African Diaspora has recently been reviewed in the Journal Feminist Economics by PhD student Kevin Tan.

Containing works from DISE members Dr. Ebun Joseph, Dr. Caroline Shenaz Hossein, Dr. Sharon D. Wright Austin, Dr. Patricia Campos Medina, and Dr. Silvane Silva, this book shines a light on the often missed contributions of the Black diaspora to the co-operative sector, offering detailed analysis of cases where Black people live and turn to co-operatives to manage systemic exclusion, which is often missing discussion of the social and solidarity economy.

“…a finer understanding can be generated of how racialized migrant women resist misogynoir within the racist environment of capitalism via politicized cooperation to bring about social transformation.”
